Statement
NCCAR Commemorates the
proclamation of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights
Today, December 10th, is International Human Rights Day. Sixty-one years go, on December 10th, 1948, the peoples of the world, through the United Nations General Assembly, proclaimed a universal standard of Human Rights. On that date, the UNGA proclaimed and adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights , a towering document that enshrines the fundamental rights of human beings everywhere.
NCCAR remembers this inspiring declaration by commemorating its anniversary on International Human Rights Day. The declaration is both one of principles, and one of law, grounded in international treaties and national constitutions and laws.
“It is worth remembering the importance of these universal rights as the basis for freedom, justice and peace in the world, which is why we refer to them in our own principles” said Rula Odeh, President, NCCAR.
According to the declaration’s preamble, “disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind.”
Articles 1 states that “all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” We encourage further study of all articles of the declaration, available here.
NCCAR reminds fellow Canadians of the importance of standing on guard for universal human rights, freedom, justice and peace for all fellow human beings worldwide.

NCCAR’s Principles that form the foundation for our mission, inspired by the UDHR:
“Principles that underpin NCCAR’s work and anchor its positions are those that Canadians cherish: truth, justice, freedom, democracy, equality and security for all people as found in international law, including universal human rights and international humanitarian law. Canadians have traditionally affirmed that Canada ’s public policies should be based on the rule of law, and should continue to underscore the importance of multilateralism as the principle means of solving the world’s challenges. NCCAR strongly endorses these sentiments.“
