Why should Canadians have access to AJE?

1. Al Jazeera news feeds have exposed the world to happenings in the Arab world that otherwise would have remained uncovered in the West.

2. Al Jazeera bucks the trend and ensures that information flows also from South to North, exposing Canadians to a diversity of points of view that reflects some of Canadian’s own multi-cultural society. 

3. As the Canadian Media became concentrated in a few corporations, contents offered to viewers kept shrinking – Bureaus are closed down and reporters are made redundant in the name of cutting costs. So the same few news outlets are used across Canada. This translates into the same issues covered by all media in any given day – i.e. little diversity and narrow points of view unfit for citizens of a globalized world. 

4. Our multicultural and diverse Canadian society wants to hear and see news from all corners of the world – not only on their computers, but on their TV screens. They need more sophisticated international perspective. They want a balanced, fair-minded view of what's going on in the world and they simply do not get that any more on their television stations and the newspapers that are available here in Canada. Al Jazeera will bring a fresh approach, diversity and challenge.

5. Al Jazeera in Canada will benefit all Canadians and be very helpful to other broadcasters: it would immediately raise the bar on international news coverage, and encourage other media outlets to start covering Canada and the world again in a serious way. 

6. Al Jazeera has enriched the media landscape in the Middle East and worldwide. It is used as a credible news source. It is already seen in 100 countries, including Israel. 

7. Al Jazeera will provide an alternative space for the interplay of cultures by opening the market place of ideas that is currently widely overlooked by Canadian media.

8. Some issues are off the radar in Canadian media. There seems to be reluctance on the part of many media organizations to deal with controversial issues in a comprehensive and fair way. This attitude is not one that fosters debates, or allows challenges to accepted notions. 

9. Canadians - and by repercussion our democracy - are poorly served when the news and views are limited in scope and source. Viewers need their media to cover issues within contexts; they need to hear opinions from diverse sources, if they are to be informed citizens a take informed positions.
