TALK BACK — CONTACT THE MEDIA
Write to the media and get your letter published. Follow
these guidelines for best results:
Letters to the Editor:
- A letter to the editor is a quick, simple, and effective
way to get your message to the public.
- The letter works well to:
- correct or clarify misinformation or misperceptions;
- provide additional or missing information;
- express an opinion or point of view on an issue
in the news;
- introduce or reinforce a specific message
- It is the most read section of the paper.
How to write an effective letter:
- Be brief and concise – make 1 or 2 points
- Maximum of 200 words
- Use your own words
- Make it quick – ideally same day before 1 pm.
- Keep it civil – don’t shout.
- Praise more than complain.
- Refer to other stories or quotes, from the same media
outlet preferrably.
- Make it relevant to Canadians, local region.
- Include your name, address, and daytime phone number
(you may get a call to confirm that you wrote the letter).
- Should you decide to write to several media outlets
on the same topic, we recommend that you send a different
letter to each media outlet (most outlets require exclusivity).
