NCCAR Condemns Attack on Ex-PM Hariri
Ottawa, Feb.
15, 2005 –
The National Council on Canada-Arab Relations (NCCAR)
deplores the killing of former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri, and extends to
his family and the Lebanese people expressions of condolences and
consolation.
Mr. Hariri
was a dedicated leader of Lebanon who was committed to reconstructing his
country physically and politically. For many years, Mr. Hariri had
established foundations that aided thousands of people helping generously in
social and educational causes. His death deprives Lebanon of one of its
truly great and generous sons.
“This is a
truly heinous crime against an individual who was instrumental to the
securing of the Taif Accord, which established peace in Lebanon,” said NCCAR
President Hussein Amery. “He followed this by serving three terms as Prime
Minister, with reconstruction of Lebanon and its economy at the centrepiece
of his efforts.”
NCCAR urges
the Lebanese people to maintain the course of peace and remain steadfast and
guard against all parties who may seek to de-stabilize it during the
country's time of mourning or those who will wage attempts to dislodge the
country from its period of hard-earned stability.
NCCAR calls upon Canada to continue its
support for Lebanon and its people and to do all it can to safeguard its
stability.
