Welcomes Canada's Renewed Commitment to Sudan Peacekeeping Forces
Ottawa, May 27, 2005 - The National Council
on Canada-Arab Relations (NCCAR) applauds Canada's renewed commitment, along
with members of the international community, to fund the African Union
peacekeeping operation and increased humanitarian assistance in Darfur as
was announced at a donors conference earlier this week.
“Prime Minister Martin has demonstrated in a
meaningful way Canada's determination to play a leadership role in
addressing the conflict in Sudan and the humanitarian situation in Darfur,”
stated NCCAR President Hussein Amery.
At least 180,000 people have died—many from
hunger and disease—and about
two million others have fled their homes in Darfur to escape the conflict.
The African Peacekeeping forces are central to stabilizing the situation and
supporting the delivery of humanitarian assistance.
“Canada's commitment of $US 205 million—an
amount greater than what the US has pledged—concretely shows that Canada can
and will play a leading role in promoting peace and the ‘Right to Protect'
as stated in the recently released International Policy Statement,” Mr.
Amery said.
Peace and stability in Sudan are essential to
the well-being of its people and the surrounding nations.
