Ramallah-Based Palestinian Human Rights Organization Begins Canadian Speaking Tour October 20, 2008
October 15 th , 2008, Ottawa, ON – The National Council on Canada Arab Relations (NCCAR) is pleased to be coordinating the national speaking tour of Al Haq, a Ramallah-based Palestinian human rights legal organization ( www.alhaq.org ) and West Bank affiliate of the Geneva based International Commission of Jurists. Al Haq begins its Canadian public speaking tour in Halifax on October 20, before continuing to Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston and Toronto.
Key Dates of the Al Haq Tour:
Halifax: October 20 - 21, 2008
Montreal: October 21 - 22, 2008
Ottawa: October 23 - October 25, 2008
Kingston: October 27, 2008
Toronto: October 28 - November 1, 2008
Updates will be issued as event details in each city are finalized. NCCAR is pleased to be working with organizations such as the Arab Canadian Lawyers' Association (ACLA).
Al-Haq, an independent Palestinian human rights NGO based in Ramallah, West Bank was established in 1979 to protect and promote human rights and the rule of law in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT). The organization documents violations of the individual and collective rights of Palestinians in the OPT, irrespective of the identity of the perpetrator, and seeks to end such breaches by way of advocacy before national and international mechanisms and by holding the violators accountable.
Al-Haq has special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, is the West Bank affiliate of the International Commission of Jurists - Geneva, and is a member of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN), the World Organization Against Torture (OMCT), the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), Habitat International Coalition (HIC), and the Palestinian NGO Network (PNGO).
