NCCAR Offers Congratulations to Senator Mac Harb

For Immediate Release

Ottawa-The National Council on Canada-Arab Relations (NCCAR) would like to extend its sincere congratulations to Mac Harb, who was summoned to the Canadian Senate today.

NCCAR applauds the decision of Prime Minister Jean Chrétien and Governor General Adrienne Clarkson. We are confident in Mr. Harb's ability to succeed in his new responsibilities.

Mr. Harb was born in Lebanon and graduated from the University of Ottawa with a Bachelor of Science and an Master of Arts. in Engineering. He has worked for Northern Telecom and served as a professor at Algonquin College.

Mr. Harb's political career began in 1985. He has since worked as Alderman, Deputy Mayor, and Member of Parliament for Ottawa Centre. His responsibilities included Opposition Critic for Public Works and Urban Affairs and Housing. As a Member of Parliament, Mr. Harb sat on several committees including: the Standing Committee on Multiculturalism and Citizenship, House Affairs, Public Accounts and the Members Services Board. He also co-chaired the Liberal Task Force on Infrastructure in 1990 and acted as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade from December 1993 until 1995.

Mr. Harb has continually shown support for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as NCCAR. Mr. Harb recognizes the critical role of NGOs as one of the most essential means of securing peace. According to Mr. Harb, NGOs have earned their place at the table.

NCCAR would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Senator Mac Harb on his appointment and wish him future success.
