Immigrating to Canada from Syria in 1911, Lawand helped establish the longest -lasting independent theatre chain in Montreal, alongside other notable members of the Lebanese-Syrian community. Few know that Heritage Landmarks such as the Rialto, Empress, Chateau, and Outremont theatres are the result of the ambition and dedication of a group of Middle-Eastern immigrants.
This unique event will feature a panel of historians,theatre experts, members of Lebanese Canadian Heritage Association(LCHA), the National Council on Canada-Arab Relations(NCCAR), and the Syrian Arab Association of Canada. Feature speakers include Dane Lanken, author of Montreal Movie Places and Norman Marino, specialist in the history of Montreal's early Syro-Lebanese Christians.
