BACKGROUNDER
Naim
Ateek had just turned 11 when his family was forced by the Israeli army to
flee their home in Beth Shean, south of the Sea of Galilee, and relocate to
Nazareth as refugees. The family settled down in Nazareth where Ateek
completed his primary and high school education. After working for
three years, he received a scholarship from Hardin-Simmons University,
Abilene, TX from where he graduated in 1963 with a BA degree. He then
studied at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, Berkeley, CA, where he
received his Master of Divinity degree in 1966. He then returned to
Nazareth and started his ministry after being ordained in the Episcopal
Church. In the first part of the 1980’s, he returned to the US where
he completed his doctoral studies at the San Francisco Theological Seminary.

After 30 years of parish ministry, he took an early retirement and dedicated
his time in the ministry of Sabeel, Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center
that he helped found at the beginning of the 1990’s. As director of Sabeel,
he expanded the ministry of Sabeel both inside the country as well as
abroad. This included ecumenical work within the Christian community in
Palestine/Israel, work for justice and peace, and inter-faith work between
Christians and Muslims. The ministry of Sabeel expanded internationally with
the establishment of Friends of Sabeel in North America, the United Kingdom,
and Scandinavia.Ateek was the first to articulate a Palestinian theology
of liberation in his book published by Orbis in 1989,
Justice, and only Justice, a Palestinian Theology of Liberation. The
book laid the foundation of a theology that addresses the conflict over
Palestine and explores political as well as religious, biblical and
theological dimensions. From the position of faith, Ateek seeks to find
solutions based on the faith principles of justice, peace, and non-violence.
