Iconic Egypt and Beyond

The exhibition «Iconic Egypt and Beyond» is an invitation to discover Egypt’s beauty, culture and history.

Photographer-artist Marlene-Luce Tremblay created the Egyptian series with a special artistic technique that involves combining two different media – photography and painting – to produce new and unique works of art that can best be described as “pintographs.”

The Egyptian series was commissioned in 2004 to celebrate the 50^th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Egypt and Canada and was shown in Montreal, Cairo, and Paris, and will also be shown in Rome next year.  Part of this photographic series is still being shown at Harrods in London.  While the Egyptian series stands alone, it is part of a larger project of cultural exchanges designed to foster a rapprochement between the Western and the Arab worlds.

The Press Office of the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in cooperation with Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada and the National Council on Canada-Arab Relations have the pleasure of hosting the launch of this exhibition in the West Main Lobby of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (125 Sussex Drive, Ottawa, Ontario). His Excellency Dr. Mahmoud El-Saeed, ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Canada, will open the exhibition. The exhibition will run until Friday, November 3, 2006.

Marlène-Luce Tremblay
Canadian Artist 

Tremblay has a string of solo, duo and group exhibitions under her belt. She won the prestigious SoHo International Art Competition in New York in 2003, and won the Second Grand Prize in an international competition in Tunisia in 2005..  In her short career, Tremblay has already exhibited in Canada, the US, Egypt, Tunisia, Paris and she was invited to produce her work in September and October of this year at Harrods in London and will be at the Egyptian Academy in Rome in February 2007.

Tremblay studied photography at the renowned Dawson Institute of Photography from 1987 to 1989 and begun working as a commercial and press photographer while she was studying. Her early photographic work focused mainly on portraiture, covering special events and press conferences. 

Tremblay’s free-lance photography work was interrupted in 1989, when she moved to New York to work at the United Nations.  During her three years at the UN, Tremblay developed a keen interest in international relations in general, and in the Arab world in particular. She decided to come back to Montreal to build on this experience and learn more about the Arab world through resuming her university education at McGill University. In 1998, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in Political Science.

Today, her two passions finally come together through this exciting and ground-breaking “International Goodwill Project”. Tremblay’s artistic technique has matured and become deeply personal. She uses it to capture the very essence of the diverse cultures that make up the Arab world.

L’exposition « Conquise par l’Égypte… » est une invitation à découvrir la beauté de l’Égypte, sa culture, son histoire et son univers mystique.

L’artiste Marlene-Luce Tremblay a mis au point une technique qui consiste à combiner deux médias, la photographie d’art et la peinture, pour produire des oeuvres nouvelles, inédites, appelées des “pintographies”.  Tremblay nous présente des œuvres de grands formats à l’échelle de la grandeur de cette grande civilisation.

Cette exposition, dont une partie est toujours exposée chez Harrods à Londres, est le fruit d’un échange culturel qui eut lieu en 2004 dans le cadre des célébrations du 50^e anniversaire de l’établissement des relations diplomatiques entre le Canada et l’Égypte.  Depuis, cette série a été exposée à Montréal, au Caire, à Paris, et sera exposée à Rome en 2007. La série sur l’Égypte fait partie d’un projet artistique international animé par le désir de faciliter un rapprochement entre le monde occidental et le monde arabe

S.E. Dr Mahmoud El-Saeed, ambassadeur d’Égypte, en collaboration avec le ministère des Affaires étrangères du Canada et le Conseil National des Relations Canado-Arabes, a le plaisir de présenter cette exposition dans le hall principal de l’Édifice Lester B. Pearson, 125 promenade Sussex, Ottawa.  L’exposition se poursuivra jusqu’au 3 novembre 2006.

Artiste Canadienne 

Tremblay a à son actif de nombreuses expositions solo, en duo et en groupe.  Elle a remporté le prestigieux concours SoHo International Art Competition de New York en 2003, et le Deuxième Grand Prix lors d’un autre concours international en Tunisie en 2005.  Dans sa courte carrière, Tremblay a exposé au Canada, aux États-Unis, en Égypte, en France et en Tunisie, et elle st invitée à présenter ses oeuvres à Londres au printemps 2006.

Tremblay a étudié la photographie au réputé Institut de photographie du Collège Dawson de 1987 à 1989 et a commencé à travailler comme photographe de presse alors qu’elle poursuivait toujours ses études.  Le portrait, les événements spéciaux et les conférences de presse lui ont alors fourni l’occasion d’exprimer son talent et d’affiner sa technique.

Ce travail de pigiste a été interrompu en 1989, Tremblay ayant accepté de déménager à New York pour travailler au Nations Unies.  Au cours des trois années qu’elle y a travaillé, elle a conçu un intérêt grandissant pour les relations internationales et plus précisément pour le monde arabe.  Elle décida de revenir à Montréal pour mettre à profit cette expérience et pour en apprendre davantage sur les civilisations arabes.  C’est dans cette perspective qu’elle retourna aux études et décrocha en 1998 un baccalauréat en Arts de l’Université McGill, avec majeur en Sciences politiques.
