Introduction
 

Dr. Adel Iskandar, visiting scholar at Georgetown University and an expert on Middle East media, will be on a visit to Ottawa from July 5-9, organized by the National Council on Canada-Arab Relations (NCCAR) as part of the Speakers' Bureau Program that invites and hosts experts on various issues relating to the Arab world from around the world to give lectures and conduct meetings with government, media and other non-governmental organizations.
 

Backgrounder
 


Dr. Adel Iskandar is an Egyptian-Canadian scholar of Middle East media. His work is highly regarded for its contribution to understanding the news media’s impact on Arab audiences both in the Middle East and across the world. Iskandar is the author and coauthor of many works including Al-Jazeera: The Story of the Network that is Rattling Governments and Redefining Modern Journalism , the first major analysis of this subject.

Dr. Iskandar combines an in-depth knowledge of culture, politics and society in the Middle East with a thorough command of international issues in contemporary media. He currently teaches at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. His forthcoming book (co-authored with Mohammed El-Nawawy) is an exploration of the internet and religious authority and is entitled Islam dot com: Cyberspace and Contemporary Islamic Discourses.
