Ziad Abdel Samad
Ziad Abdel Samad is the
Executive Director of the Arab NGO Network for Development (ANND),
based in Beirut, since 1999. ANND brings together 30 NGOs and nine
national networks from 12 Arab countries active in the fields of social
development, human rights, gender, and the environment. The network,
established in 1997, focuses on developing the capacity of Arab civil
society organizations and promoting democracy, human rights,
participation and good governance in civil society and among governments.

Michael Tarazi
From
October 20-27, Michael Tarazi will speak at a number of
engagements in Canada. He is one of the lead negotiators for the
Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO). He has been described in a
front-page article in the Wall Street Journal as "the
most articulate and sophisticated Palestinian advocate to come along in
years."
Michael Tarazi will be
visiting Montreal, Ottawa, London, Hamilton, and Toronto, . The
lecturies are
organized by Solidarity for Palestinian Human
Rights (SPHR).

Rev. Dr. Naim Ateek
From October 6-24,
NCCAR will co-sponsor a lecture tour by Rev. Dr. Naim Ateek, who
is the director of the Sabeel Theology
Center in Jerusalem, author of Justice and Only Justice (Orbis,
1989) and a leading Palestinian Christian theologian. He lives and serves in
Palestine/Israel.
Rev. Dr. Ateek will be
visiting Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, Halifax and
Montreal. The tour is
organized by Canadian Friends of Sabeel (CFOS)
and co-sponsored by the National Council on Canada-Arab Relations
(NCCAR) and the Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives (KAIROS).

Dr. Uri Davis
Dr. Uri Davis will speak at a number of
engagements in Ontario and Quebec. Dr. Davis is a distinguished academic and
defender of human rights who has written and edited 15 books as well as
numerous articles in the field of politics, legal systems and human rights
in Israel and Palestine. In his talk, Apartheid Israel and the Jewish
National Fund: The story of Amwas, Yalu, Beit Nuba and Canada Park, Dr.
Davis will examine how the Jewish National Fund shares a responsibility in funding illegal
settlements in the West Bank,Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, and what impact Canada’s
policy has in the region.
Dr.
Davis will visit Windsor, London, Toronto, Kingston, Ottawa and
Montreal. The tour is organized by the National Council on
Canada-Arab Relations, Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights –
Southern Ontario Regional Committee, and Kingston for Palestinian
Human Rights, Near Eastern Cultural Educational Foundation,
Palestine House/Toronto and London Canadian Palestinian Association.

An Overview of NCCAR's 2002 guest lecturers
Scott Ritter
Mr. Scott Ritter arrived in Ottawa on the
invitation of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade (SCFAIT).
Mr. Ritter is the former chief weapons inspector in Iraq. He has been critical of President Bush's intention
to wage war on Iraq. He spoke about his role with UNSCOM and also addressed the issue of lack of evidence to
attack Iraq.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hans Von Sponeck
Mr. Von Sponeck is the
former Coordinator of the Oil for Food Program. He addressed the humanitarian aspects of the sanctions.
Mr. Sponeck engaged the editorial board of the Globe and Mail and other media and met with several Members
of Parliament. Hans' visit was coordinated in partnership with the Canadian Network to End Sanctions on Iraq
(CANESI).

Dennis Halliday
Mr. Halliday served in Iraq as
the Coordinator of the Oil for Food Program. He was the first United Nations official to resign his post in
protest of the economic sanctions and has referred to the sanctions as genocidal. He had visited Canada on
several occasions to address the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade (SCFAIT).

The Arch Bishop Badawid represents
over three million Iraqi Catholics who are scattered around the world. He addressed issues surrounding Iraqi
humanitarian concerns and the plight of the Church in Iraq. His message was received positively by the media
and government because of his moral standing and credibility.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mark Ellis
Professor Ellis is a leading scholar of Jewish Theology and an analyst on
Palestinian/Israeli affairs. He lectures extensively on Israeli-Jewish diaspora relations. Basing his
criticism on Jewish theological teachings, professor Ellis is considered controversial, and has been accused
of perpetuating self hating Jewish messages. This activity was organized with the help of the Carleton Arab
Student Association and Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights-Carleton.

and George Rishmawi
These two speakers were invited by a Canadian human rights
group to tour four cities. They discussed the current affairs in Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The two
speakers addressed cooperation and collaboration among and between Israelis and Palestinians against the
occupation. They also engaged in a discussion on future of Palestine. The national organizers of this tour
included CAF, Sabeel, Kairos, MCC, and many other local and international organizations.

Norman Finklstein
Professor Finklstein visited Montreal and Canada discussing
his recent book-The Holocaust Industry. In his discussions he outlined his research on the development of
US-Israeli relations in the post 1967 war and on how American Jewish elite benefited from the suffering of
Holocaust survivors-his parents escaped death in Nazi camps. Mr. Finklstein is one of the most prominent
scholars on the topic of Israeli-American relations and Palestinian suffering. He lived and worked in
Palestine during the first Intifada of the 1980's. His tour was coordinated with the Middle East Working
Group at Carleton University. |
