Ottawa Arab Forum an OACP initiative!
The OAF connects Arab-Canadian organizations in the Ottawa region. It allows organizations to post their profiles in an open database and also to post events on a calendar for all organizations to better coordinate with each other their activities. For more information www.arabforum.ca

Ottawa-Arab Community Project

NCCAR and the Ontario Trillium Foundation signed an agreement in December 2005 to create links between Arab organizations in the Ottawa region, in order to improve communication, understanding, and create a better social climate.

This is an excellent project which is geared to creating a more active and inclusive Arab-Canadian community of diverse origins and a better understanding of Canadian society by fostering the development of local initiatives. NCCAR will be arranged for Arab organizations in the Ottawa region to work towards more cooperation and collaboration. NCCAR is looking to recruit volunteers from the Arab Canadian community of Ottawa to help in the production of this Ottawa Arab community newsletter, which will serve to publicize the profiles of the different organizations and their activities.

Objective

As part of NCCAR's activities in Ottawa, we have been working to create links between Arab organizations in the Ottawa region, in order to improve communication, understanding, and create a better social climate. The project is geared to creating a more active and inclusive Arab-Canadian community of diverse origins and a better understanding of Canadian society by fostering the development of local initiatives.

The first issue of Ottawa Focus, a newsletter highlighting the Arab community of Ottawa, has been produced, seeking to bring attention to the different Arab organizations in the Ottawa region.

In future issues, NCCAR is looking to recruit volunteers from the Arab Canadian community of Ottawa to help in the production and distribution of this Ottawa Arab community newsletter, which will serve to publicize the profiles of other Arab organizations and their activities.

Activities

Newsletter
NCCAR will assist in producing a newsletter devoted to the issues of the Arab community in the Ottawa-region and in promoting the activities of the various organizations serving the community. Six issues of the newsletter will be produced by NCCAR in 2006 as part of the Trillium Foundation funding, following which, the newsletter would be self-maintained by the Arab community in future years.

This newsletter will be distributed both in print form and electronically through this website to Arab community organizations, members and businesses.

Meetings
NCCAR will be assisting in the coordination of four meetings this year with the different Arab community organizations working in Ottawa. The purpose of the meetings is to have better communication and coordination between the organizations on future activities, events and projects.

Community Meetings

February 2006 - Members of various Arab community organizations attended a meeting coordinated by NCCAR with Canada's representative to the Middle East peace process, Jill Sinclair in Ottawa. The various participants in the meeting discussed issues that of importance to them regarding Canada's foreign policy issues in the region and how it affects Arab-Canadians.

May 2006 - NCCAR discussed the issue of cooperation between Ottawa-region Arab organizations with members of CAPCA (www.capcaonline.ca) in a meeting. Discussions on how this project of a newsletter and meetings between the various Arab organizations working in Ottawa can be sustainable. Furthermore, strategies were breifly discussed on how to fund these initiatives in the years to come as well as the coordination of the contributions for the newsletter as well as proposing an online forum for communication between the groups.

July 2006 - NCCAR Meeting with local Ottawa Arab organizations about newsletter content, contribution and volunteers. Also discussing collaborations on activities and events.

October 2006 - Meeting for Ottawa Arab Community Groups/Organizations - at NCCAR (63 Sparks St., Suite 301) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 @ 8pm.

NCCAR organized a meeting with various Arab community organizations working in Ottawa to discuss ways of better cooperation, collaboration and communication on activities and events through the development of an online calendar of events and maintenance of a local newsletter for the Arab community, Ottawa Focus. The meeting was well attended with 15 organizations represented. The discussions were very constructive. This project is funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, and other community organizations were encouraged to seek funding for their local organizations through the foundation.

November 2006 - Meeting with Ottawa Arab community groups/organizations - at Ottawa City Hall (111 Lisgar St., Billings Room) on Wednesday November 8, 2006 @ 8pm.

NCCAR organized a meeting with various Arab community organizations working in Ottawa to discuss ways of better cooperation, collaboration and communication on activities and events through the development of an online calendar of events and maintenance of a local newsletter for the Arab community, Ottawa Focus. Several Ottawa Arab organizations attended this meeting. The discussions were very constructive and focused on creating a central internet location for Arab organizations working in Ottawa in order to serve as a database of organizations and also as a location to announce events taking place in the city.

December 2006 - A steering committee for the Ottawa Arab community planned project has been put in place, working on maintaining and enhancing the created links between the Arab organizations in the National Capital Region. The project would involve the continuation of the Ottawa Focus newsletter in addition to the creation of a new website, "Ottawa Arab Forum" which will be launched in January 2007.
