NCCAR E-ArabiCa - Week of September 9th, 2008

  • Larry Shaben, a dear friend and former board member of NCCAR, died of cancer Saturday at the age of 73. Mr. Shaben, a Lebanese immigrant, was the first Muslim MPP to be elected to the Alberta legislature in 1975 where he served for fourteen years, ten of them in Cabinet. In 2005, he was appointed a citizenship judge. Following September 11, 2001, Mr. Shaben was the driving force that brought together Edmonton's Muslim groups under one umbrella, the Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities, and helped fundraise $1 Million which the Council contributed towards an Islamic studies chair at the University of Alberta. Mr. Shaben was very proud of his Arab heritage. He will be missed.
  • Bahija Réghaï, president of NCCAR, attended the opening ceremony of the ‘Walking Under Occupation Exhibit' for  Rehab Nazzal which is organized at The Ottawa School of Arts Gallery from September 4th to October 5th, 2008. Walking under Occupation explores the sense of life and death, and war and peace, and exposes the absurdity of the daily Palestinian reality in the occupied Palestinian Territory.
  • · Mark Khoury, Vice-President, Government and Media Relations of NCCAR, was interviewed by Paul Weinberg of Toronto News Weekly. The discussion covered NCCAR's viewpoint on the positions held by the federal parties with regards to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
