NCCAR WORKING FOR YOU
MPs
returning from NCCAR Mission to MidEast Speak in Ottawa
Bloc Québécois MP Maria
Mourani and Liberal MP Borys Wrzesnewskyj were the guest speakers at a
dinner held in Ottawa by the National Council on Canada-Arab Relations. The
Stories from the Ground event
allowed the MPs to give their impressions of what they saw on the ground in
Lebanon only days after a ceasefire was brokered. NDP MP Peggy Nash was
unable to attend due to a family emergency. Riccardo Fillipone from her
office said a few words on her behalf. Arab-Canadian community newspaper
Sada Al Mashrek covered the dinner and will have coverage of the event in
their next edition. NCCAR organised the fact-finding mission to Lebanon,
Egypt and Syria in August where the MPs met with Lebanese Prime Minister
Fouad Siniora, Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa as well as dozens of
politicians, civil society members and international experts. NCCAR is
organising the second leg of the mission to include Palestine, Israel and
Jordan. Similar events with the MPs who participated in the non-partisan
trip (a Conservative MP had confirmed he would participate in the mission
but pulled out at the last minute) are being planned in other Canadian
cities. For more information on the delegation, please visit:
http://www.nccar.ca/programs/parl_delegation.htm
Government Cuts International Internship Programme
A recent announcement of funding cuts to government programmes made by
Treasury Board Minister John Baird included the Young Professionals
International programme, which NCCAR has implemented since 1998. The
programme, funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International
Trade, allowed NCCAR to send Canadian youth of all backgrounds to work for
six months in the Arab world. This year's 10 participants are in Egypt,
Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria working for such distinguished
organisations as the League of Arab States, Al-Ahram Weekly, Egypt Today,
l'Économiste, Réalités, and the Jordan Times. On average, approximately 400
youth, and just over 40 Implementing Organizations and 300 Host
Organizations participate in YPI per year. NCCAR believes that if Canada is
to have a more prominent place on the world stage, we must have policy
makers who have experienced the world and this internship programme did just
that. This is why NCCAR has partnered with other implementing organisations
to help organise an advocacy campaign with former participants who are
speaking with government representatives about why this programme is
important to young Canadian professionals. We will keep you informed about
our efforts to save this important initiative. Annik Lussier, NCCAR Director
of Communication, participated in a news conference on Parliament Hill
alongside other implementing organizations, including United Nations
Association of Canada, Canadian Bar Association, Mines Action Canada, and
with Foreign Affairs Critics, Keith Martin (Liberal), Alexa McDonough (NDP),
as well as Vivian Barbot (Bloc) to ask the government to reinstate the YPI
program.
NCCAR
Supports Egyptian Embassy Art Exhibition by Marlene-Luce Tremblay
From October 30 to
November 3 – The
Press Office of the Embassy of the Arab
Republic of Egypt organized an art exhibition entitled, “Iconic Egypt and
Beyond”, in cooperation with Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada
and the National Council on Canada-Arab Relations. Photographer-artist
Marlene-Luce Tremblay created the Egyptian series through “pintographs”. The
series was commissioned in 2004 to celebrate the 50th anniversary
of diplomatic relations between Egypt and Canada and was shown in Montreal,
Cairo, and Paris, and will also be shown in Rome next year. While the
Egyptian series stands alone, it is part of a larger project of cultural
exchanges designed to foster a rapprochement between the Western and the
Arab worlds. The launch of the exhibition was attended by Egyptian
ambassador, HE Dr. Mahmoud El-Saeed and Middle East Bureau Director General,
Gordon Venner, as well as various dignitaries and members of the Egyptian
and Arab communities in Ottawa.

Gatineau
100 Laurier Street,
Gatineau (on the banks of the Ottawa River and opposite Parliament Hill).
This exhibition is the most complete portrait ever mounted of the amazing
and enigmatic city of Petra. It tells the story of this once-thriving

of the technological virtuosity that allowed the Nabateans to build and

200 BC, Petra stood at the crossroads of the Silk Road and the spice routes
that connected China, India and Arabia with markets in Greece, Rome, Egypt
and Syria. The exhibition is organized by the Cincinnati Art Museum and the
